Paddy Cakes, The One I Won't Let Go.

Paddy Cakes has come a long way in the year that I have had her. On July 2, 2002 I was on my way to check up on a foster cat that I had adopted and wanted to do a follow up call to make sure she was adjusting well in her new home. On my way to see her I spotted what I thought was a kitten on the side of the road. I knew I did not have room for any more cats and closed off my heart as I drove by it. I made the mistake that all rescuers do and looked in the rear view mirror and saw it still by the road, I decided I could at least give the kitten a good meal for the day and turned around to feed it. I always carry food, water, medical needs and a carrier in my car for emergencies like this. I stopped near the kitten hoping that I would not scare it and it would dash into the road. I went to the back of my car and opened the hatch to pull out the food and water, leaving my drivers door open which is a bad habit I have. When I came around with the food I found the kitten sitting in the drivers seat but the smell of the food brought it to my feet, I watched as it devoured the food and thought it was so unusual with one blue eye and one yellow eye. Went back to get more food and it jumped into the back of my car, I was hooked ! I have always felt thing happen for a reason, I chose this day, this time to do a follow up call and the kitten chose this day to be on the side of the road. It was or some one was saying save this kitten I took it to the veterinarian we use and they got me in right away. It turned out to be a little girl weighting just 4 1/2 pound but she was about 6 years old or older. Her blue eye turned out to be scare tissue from a severe Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) she must have had at one time. She had ringworm, scabies and URI . I took her home and treated her for several weeks, it took almost three months to get her back on her feet and ready for adoption. It was almost two month later that the staining on her fur was completely gone and her white fur was white once again. Paddy Cakes has made her self at home in my house, she has wormed her way into my husbands heart and really prefers him to me. She plays like a kitten doing summersaults and twist in the air while playing with her toys. She runs full speed though the house and up the cat tree in a single bound.. We think that she is making up for the kitten hood she probably never had. I have taken her to the adoption center several times but can not find anyone who I feel will make her a good home, great people but I always found a reason to say no, No you do not have a house only an apartment, No you do not have a screened in porch where she like to lay in the sun, No you work and are gone all day. Get the picture ? I have since stopped taking her to the adoption center saying there was not room or I had another foster that I need to concentrate on adopting but I think the other fosters and my husband really know the truth and maybe after putting this all into words so do I. Paddy Cakes has a home, one with a screened in porch, one with someone home most of the time, and two people that love her very much. Paddy Cakes has a home with my husband , 10 other cats and me.

All of the RAIN volunteers who have been involved for any length of time have had a foster come that they just couldn't part with. Usually there was a problem with the animal. Sometimes health problems. Sometimes a behavior problem, often induced or aggravated by the past owner.
